Why People Love Living on Anastasia Island
Anastasia Island is where St. Augustine goes to the beach. It offers wide Atlantic beaches, state parkland, the iconic lighthouse and a relaxed coastal pace, all minutes from the historic downtown. Whether you picture a beach cottage, a home on the Matanzas River or an oceanfront estate, the island offers a lifestyle that’s hard to match.
About the Island
Anastasia Island is a barrier island about 14 miles long and roughly a mile wide, separated from the mainland by the Matanzas River and stretching south to Matanzas Inlet. Its history runs deep: the Spanish quarried coquina here to build much of St. Augustine, including the Castillo de San Marcos, and Fort Matanzas has guarded the island’s southern end since the 1740s. The Bridge of Lions, completed in 1927, connects the island to downtown.
